If carmakers are going to bet their futures on this technology, they will do so very gradually. Moreover, electric vehicles are unproven in the real world. The fact is that electric vehicles are prohibitively expensive today-the battery alone in an electric car can cost $20,000-and will remain so for some time. Independent analysts, however, such as Tim Urquhart of IHS Global Insight, believe that battery-powered vehicles will remain at less than one percent of the new-car mix in 2020.
